Overview

Energy Systems Group (ESG) is searching for a Maintenance and Operations Facilities Engineer for our Operations team. This position will be located virtually, but travel to support our teams nationwide.

As a valued member of our Operations Team, the Maintenance and Operations Facilities Engineer pro-actively manages power generation, utility, HVAC, and facility assets to maximize value to our customers and stakeholders. You will be responsible for the reliable operations of plants and equipment at ESG managed sites, including providing technical knowledge and ownership.

As the Facilities Engineer, you will support local management to deliver results related to EHS, financial performance, plant reliability and efficiency, customer satisfaction, and employee training and development. You will have technical knowledge of and practical experience with processes and equipment related to steam generation and distribution, hot water systems, chilled water systems, electrical power generation, and landfill gas purification. You will need to be able to think and plan strategically yet also operate in a "hands on" manner.

Responsibilities
    Responsible for the cost effective, reliable operations of all ESG site systems.
  • Provides innovative technical and engineering "hands on" support to assure dependable, reliable, safe and efficient operation of all power generation, utility and HVAC equipment.
  • Partners with site leadership to ensure all objectives are met in: safety, environmental, financial performance, customer satisfaction, employee development, plant efficiency and reliability.
  • Serves as role model for achieving world class safety performance including identifying and executing improvements at the sites, ensuring safe sub-contractor performance, providing technical training to technicians, conducting Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), investigating / resolving safety incidents, and ensuring equipment complies with all regulatory ( including EPA, OSHA,...) and company requirements.
  • Improves plant and equipment reliability at all ESG managed sites. Identifies issues and establishes site specific short term and long term improvement plans.
  • Takes ownership for establishing, reviewing, implementing, and optimizing appropriate predictive and preventive maintenance programs and technologies to improve overall plant reliability.
  • Reviews and trends equipment performance, control system data, CMMS equipment data, etc. to identify and prioritize reliability improvement initiatives and projects.
  • Monitors and optimizes plant operating parameters and strategies to achieve business goals.
  • Conducts root cause investigations for all major plant and equipment issues and ensures actions are taken to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Assists local management with root cause analysis, corrective actions and process optimization initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot efforts to resolve more difficult equipment and operational problems.
  • Directs larger and/or more complex equipment repairs at sites.
  • Assists sites in planning and executing turnarounds and shutdowns.
  • Maintains technical oversight of start-up activities including trouble shooting and establishing performance expectations.
  • Benchmarks others and identifies new technologies that would improve cost, plant operations and customer satisfaction. Keeps abreast of industry best practices.
  • Performs lifecycle and reliability evaluations of equipment in order to proactively establish short and long term plans for dealing with equipment aging and obsolescence.
  • Provides technical training and coaching to technicians in the effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of company facilities, processes, and systems.
  • Coordinates work with contractors, equipment suppliers, and other outside agencies as required.
  • Can serve as back up to local site management as required.
  • Leads or assists in the engineering effort to develop projects to expand or enhance each facility as opportunities arise.
Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Process (Chemical) or Electrical Engineering
  • Related experience in power generation, utility plants, or large scale manufacturing facility
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and Computerized Maintenance Management systems (CMMS)
  • Must be able to travel up to 75%, including overnight, depending on location

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license; NIULPE license; Certified Energy Manager
  • Experience and training in the principles of preventive and predictive maintenance, reliability programs, and reliability centered maintenance and methodologies
  • Strong knowledge in area of utility control systems; Experience with Delta V desired
  • Formal training and experience utilizing Root Cause Analysis, Six Sigma, and/or Lean techniques
  • Knowledge of process and equipment related to steam generation and distribution, hot water systems, chilled water systems, electrical power generation, landfill gas purification
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering practices, economic principles, design codes and standards related to these processes
  • Understanding of regulations governing utility operations including environmental, safety, and construction codes
  • Develop and implement equipment reliability programs including predictive and preventive maintenance
  • Lead people and multi-disciplinary teams in a complex environment to achieve the objectives of the organization
  • Hands on experience in the negotiation and management of contracts and agreements with engineering contractors, vendors, regulatory, and government agencies
  • Ability to proactively identify issues and develop alternate solutions and contingency plans
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities at multiple sites
  • Define problems, collect and trend data, establish root cause and effective corrective / preventive actions
  • Demonstrates accountability in meeting objectives, and communicating both positive and negative information in an open and timely manner
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with all levels of ESG, external organizations, and customers
  • Ability to lead, train, and develop employees operating and maintaining a very technical process
